Recycle Your Christmas Tree at UBC Botanical Garden and Help Grow School Gardens!

The holiday season is almost over, and you might be wondering what to do with your Christmas tree. Instead of tossing it in the trash or elsewhere, why not recycle it and support a great cause? From December 26, 2024, to January 10, 2025, you can drop off your tree at UBC Botanical Garden between 10 am and 2 pm. A minimum donation of $5 is appreciated, and your contribution will make a big difference.

All donations will go towards the School Gardens Program, which helps students learn about gardening and the environment. This program is currently raising funds to renovate a school garden, replacing three old garden beds, buying compost, and creating a pollinator-friendly space.

Helping Students at Twelfth Ave Elementary

This year, your donations will help Twelfth Ave Elementary School in Burnaby. This inner-city school serves over 300 students, many of whom come from diverse, multilingual backgrounds, including newcomer families. Since many families in the area live in multi-family housing with little outdoor space, the new school garden will give students a place to grow fresh food, learn about healthy eating, and understand how local food systems work.

Teachers and parents are thrilled about this project. The garden will improve food security, teach valuable skills, and create opportunities for families to connect and share knowledge across cultures. With your help, the students will start planting in the spring!
