Green2Go
This project was completed in 2013.
The Project
The collaborative Green2Go Project aimed to reduce landfill-bound solid waste in Vancouver by working with restaurants and the public to reduce take-out container use.
Project Accomplishments:
- Assisted, leveraged, and centralized existing initiatives in Vancouver
- Encouraged and assisted businesses and consumers in transitioning to fully reusable, compostable or recyclable alternatives.
- Established solutions based on environment standards, restaurant specific needs and economic considerations.
The Problem
In 2013, takeout food containers were adding 25,000 tonnes to landfills annually, making up about 1.6 per cent of the weight of residential waste and 3.6 percent of industrial, commercial and institutional waste (Metro Vancouver). And many take-out containers never even make it to the landfill. When take-out containers are improperly discarded, it ends up polluting our waterways and oceans.
This project seeks to reduce these environmental effects by educating and assisting businesses in transitioning to better take-out container solutions and engaging the public in making the best choice at local restaurants.
Resources
As part of the project, the Waste Team produced numerous resources and reports on the final result of the project.
