Waste reduction enthusiasts are invited to our upcoming SPEC Zero Waste Committee meeting, which will feature a special guest presentation from Metro Vancouver. This is a unique opportunity to hear firsthand about the latest updates on the regional solid waste management plan, directly from those driving the system.
What is the Solid Waste Management Plan?
Metro Vancouver is currently in the process of updating their solid waste management plan. The plan focuses on reducing waste, increasing recycling, and managing remaining waste efficiently to meet public expectations for environmental stewardship. The plan includes initiatives to enhance waste reduction, reuse, and recycling systems, while also maintaining affordable waste management practices. The current update aims to build on these efforts, identifying new strategies to further reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and to promote a circular economy in the region.
September Meeting to feature presenter from Metro Vancouver
This presentation is part of their idea generation phase, and Metro Van is seeking valuable feedback from the Zero Waste Committee to help shape the future of waste management in our region.
During this meeting, we will discuss how we, as a community, can contribute to Metro Vancouver’s plan by:
- Rethinking and preventing waste from the outset.
- Enhancing accountability for eliminating waste throughout the region.
We encourage all attendees to review the webpage provided by Metro Vancouver in advance, so we can engage in a productive and impactful discussion. Your input is essential in helping us build on our successes and continue to foster a sustainable, zero-waste future. If you have any question for Metro Vancouver, please email zerowaste@metrovancouver.org

SPEC's Zero Waste Committee - A place to discuss challenges, opportunities, and avenues for change
SPEC’s Zero Waste Committee (ZWC) is dedicated to advocating for a Zero Waste model that emphasizes community and grassroots action. We believe in promoting practical tools that prevent unnecessary consumption, helping to protect our environment and combat climate change. The SPEC ZWC is comprised of regular people from a variety of backgrounds including students, professionals, entrepreneurs, business owners, and hobbyists. The ZWC has had many individuals become Master Recycler alumni, editors on an upcoming Multi Unit Residential Building (MURB) waste management handbook, and waste management business owners. Everyone is welcome to join a Zero Waste Committee meeting.
