Practical Solutions for URBAN SUSTAINABILITY
We empower local communities in the Lower Mainland to build a greener future through our interactive programs and activities. The Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) is a non-profit, charitable and volunteer-driven organization, founded in 1969. We are one of the oldest environmental non-profits in Canada.
Mission: To provide our community with practical solutions for urban sustainability.
Vision: A healthy, just and vibrant urban life that enhances local and global eco-systems.
Education, Research & Advocacy
Through our open education and outreach programs we provide communities with the tools and skills to build greener cities together. We work with citizens, industries and government agencies, to develop capacity to address a wide range of sustainability challenges, using science-based, practical approaches. Our areas of work include:
Food - building a more sustainable and resilient local food system
Energy - promoting conservation and the use of renewable energy
Transportation - advocating for sustainable transportation
Waste - promoting practices that lead to waste reduction
Climate Change - Supporting communities on climate action and climate justice
