Please join us for our End of the Year Party and Annual General Meeting on December 4 at Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, in the Main Hall.
This is one party you don't want to miss. There will be a cash/card bar, light refreshments, a silent auction, raffle prizes and a big birthday cake for our 50th!
We will be electing SPEC’s new Board of Directors and reviewing our 2019 work. Come and mingle with other SPEC supporters and meet the volunteers and staff that have been hard at work to run our projects in the community.
We are honoured to have Dr. Sm’hayetsk Teresa Ryan as a speaker this evening, presenting "Sisters of Mother Trees". Dr. Ryan is a Research Associate and Sessional Lecturer in Forest and Conservation Sciences at UBC Vancouver. She examined colonial dispossession of Aboriginal lands and trade for her PhD dissertation. She explored Ancestral ecological-social institution linkages in terms that better portray an Aboriginal viewpoint, and the connection of these complex adaptive systems to heterogeneous mosaic landscapes. She demonstrated how thousands of years of sustainable use based on Ancestral knowledge of cyclic resource production and variability was an intuitive component of Aboriginal stewardship. Her current Salmon-forest research in the lab of Professor Suzanne Simard investigates the potential to restore salmon abundance by using ancient Aboriginal salmon fishing technology and strategies.
